About Us
Birch Construction is a worker owned, collectively run remodeling company based in South Minneapolis. We specialize in remodeling older homes, bringing new life to well loved spaces while honoring the character that makes them unique. Birch was founded in 2016 by two friends ready to take their building experience to the next level.
Our crew is down-to-earth, easy to work with, and committed to doing things the right way- for our clients and the environment.
Our collective is made up of around 8 tradespeople with experience ranging from beginners to those with decades in the trades. Whether we’re restoring original charm or updating for modern living, our focus is on honest work, thoughtful design, and lasting relationships.
Why a collective?
A collective is a way of working where decisions are made collaboratively, not handed down from a boss or manager. We find that when everyone has a voice and real ownership over their work, we’re happier, more invested, and more fulfilled. That kind of work environment doesn’t just benefit us — it leads to more accountability, stronger teamwork, and better outcomes for our clients.
Some thoughts on buildings
The buildings we occupy have a profound impact on how we feel. Just ask anyone who attended South High School and had class in a room with no windows. Some of these factors are all but universal, like desire for natural light, or heat in the winter. Other’s are matters of taste, like the joy someone gets out of classic craftsman trim or a sleek modern look. The quality of design and installation in our buildings will be felt by everyone who spends time there, hopefully for decades to come.
Buildings also have a large impact our demand for energy, and the materials we choose to build with can have impacts on our health and that of the natural world.
We want buildings that are comfortable, healthy, beautiful, energy efficient, minimize environmental impacts and will last a long time. Alas, there is one more major factor when balancing the decisions of design and construction: price. Construction is expensive, often requiring teams of specialized people using specialized tools installing specialized materials in custom situations.
All of this is to say that construction is a balancing act, and when you approach us for a project it is our job to help you navigate these often competing factors. There is rarely one right answer when it comes to design or construction, and that is part of the fun. We take your goals and budget, factor in our judgement and experience, and, in conversation, turn it into a built reality. Sounds a bit like real world magic, and on a good day, it is.
